Festival Season in Athens

Athens builds its summer programme on venues no other city has - a Roman odeion beneath the Acropolis lit up at night, a 19th-century gasworks that now draws a million visitors a year, and two hillsides north of the city where Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, and the first European Big Four thrash convergence have all taken place. May through September, the city is continuously live.

Athens festival season

Athens festival season runs from May through September, anchored by the Odeon of Herodes Atticus - a 5,000-seat Roman theatre built in 161 AD at the foot of the Acropolis by the rhetorician Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife Aspasia Annia Regilla. Restored in 1955, it serves as the flagship venue of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, which has run continuously since that year. Each summer the Herodion hosts operas, orchestras, and international artists against the illuminated Acropolis - among the most distinctive open-air concert settings in Europe. Notable past performers include Maria Callas (1957), Luciano Pavarotti (1991, 2004), and Coldplay (2024). Tickets sell out early in the season.

Ejekt Festival, founded in 2005 and held at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (OAKA) in Marousi, draws over 55,000 visitors annually. Its past lineups have included Muse, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, The Chemical Brothers, Beastie Boys, and Pixies. Rockwave Festival, founded in 1996 - celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026 - has been held since 2004 at Terra Vibe Park in Malakasa, a 40-acre site 37 km north of Athens. Rockwave headliners across its three decades have included Metallica (2007), Iron Maiden (2018), AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, and The Prodigy (multiple years). The 2010 Sonisphere edition at Terra Vibe was the first time in Europe that thrash metal's 'Big Four' (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax) performed together.

Technopolis in Gazi, the former Athens municipal gasworks operational from 1857 until 1984 and converted into a cultural venue in 1999, hosts approximately 900 events per year across its 30,000 m² site and attracts over one million visitors annually - including the Athens Jazz Festival and Athens Music Week. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, designed by Renzo Piano and completed in 2016 at a cost of $861 million, offers free open-air performances on its 210,000 m² waterfront park from June through August. The Lycabettus Theatre, a 4,000-seat open-air amphitheatre on Athens's highest hill, reopened in 2023 after full restoration and programmes 50+ concert nights each summer.
