European Capital of Culture in 2023 and the city where Romania's 1989 revolution began, Timișoara backs its multicultural Banat character with JAZZx and the PLAI world-music festival. Every concert on Mood.
Timișoara held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023, the culmination of a city with an outsized place in Romanian history: the 1989 revolution began here on 16 December, and on 20 December Timișoara was proclaimed the first Romanian city free of communism, with dissidents speaking from the balcony of the Opera house on the square now called Victory Square. The city is the informal capital of the multicultural Banat region, home to more than twenty ethnic groups, and that mix runs through its music.
Its festivals reflect that breadth. JAZZx - founded in 2013 as JazzTM - stages free open-air concerts in Liberty Square each July, with past headliners including Gregory Porter and Marcus Miller; the PLAI festival, running since 2006, is a volunteer-run world-music event. The classical institutions are long-established - the Banatul Philharmonic dates to 1871 and the Romanian National Opera Timișoara to 1946. Every concert and live show is on Mood.
